Random Fandom - Shipping

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 19, 2008, 5:20 AM

Format is kind of screwy. You can always read the neater version of this at my LJ: [link] ^^;

On the subject of fanfic. You know what sucks? Being unable to wrap your mind around popular fandom pairings that everyone goes 'omgCANON' and 'They're so meant for each other - look at all the subtext!' over and you just sit there LOOKING and trying and FAILING to see what they're getting at and thinking 'Ok WTF, am I missing something here...?' I'd name names but I don't want to offend anyone's ships. I let them grate my nerves in private haha

I swear the older I get the more I appreciate the pairings that AREN'T so popular. Because they usually aren't so fantarded...and I swear there's nothing more perplexing than ship wars. :O I mean god Narnia fandom, you're the last I'd expect to see such a massive slash fanbase of all things and there you are debating over whether Peter/Edmund is more OTP than Caspian/Peter. WTF people. WTF. Ship wars are ridiculous. And why do I get the feeling they're usually started by preteen (both physically AND mentally) fanbrats...|D What else is there...oh yeah.

Harry/Hermione vs Ron/Hermione - Harry Potter
Zutara vs Kataang - Avatar
Remus/Sirius vs Remus/Tonks - Harry Potter

Of course the latter are proven canon, and I have nothing against the former...except that they're usually the ones with the whiny, defensive fanbrats, which is a real turn off when you're trying to like a pairing. If the subtext is all over the place for both sides I usually support whatever ship gives "canon evidence" aka a KISS. I never really liked Remus/Sirius but just when I wanted to give it a chance R/S fangirls were bashing how 'fake' Remus/Tonks was. Fake right. So I guess I'm missing something because when did R/S ever become 'real'? Fandom, remember the word. Just because you don't like canon doesn't mean it's going to up and disappear.

In the Animorphs fandom I've really grown to dislike Jake/Cassie because it feels boring and forced and Cassie seems content to keep to her moralistic values while Jake is just trying to survive and spiralling into a dark pit of despair while doing so. But they ARE a canon couple and as much as I don't like it, I accept it. Though I prefer Marco/Jake by a long run because pairing aside they understand what the other is going through and run with it, not ditch each other. But then they ARE best friends.

As abrupt and WTF as Remus/Tonks was for me too, in the ship's defence the story is from Harry's POV, so for all we know Remus and Tonks might have been dancing around each other for months. It's not like we could SEE it because Harry wasn't THERE half the time and he wasn't really concentrating on looking for hints was he? Logic...sad that ship wars often lack this. XD

---------------------------

I think what grates me the most though...are people who ship a pairing in a fandom without EVER reading/playing/watching it, and are just basing it off some good fic they read god knows where. As a person who has made that mistake in the past I have to say BAD IDEA. VERY BAD IDEA. Don't EVER do that because as nice as fandom is you're really going to be let down once you see the canon and realize it's not what you imagined.

For example you've never in your life played FVIII but you see a fanart of Squall/Rinoa and think they are goddamn adorable together. Fair enough. But you might be let down playing the game...their romance wasn't exactly 'a love of the ages'. I learned that the hard way unfortunately. BD That's why I'm not surprised when I see people shipping Seifer/Squall because honestly, their rivalry was far more interesting than the slipshod romance that just HAPPENED out of the blue. It's a shame: at face value I quite like Squall/Rinoa, though it takes some really good fanfic for me to like the pairing after playing the game.

But man, if you don't know squat about the game and go off saying that Seifer became Squall's rival because he was jealous that Squally-boy stole his girlfriend Rinoa then...geez. WTF. If you're trying to prove their straightness, wow, that was a really bad way of doing it and just shows how LITTLE you know about the characters. Seifer has been Squall's self-appointed rival since they were kids, WAY before Rinoa was there. You don't ever see him hounding Squall for getting close to Rinoa do you? He's focused more on his 'romantic dream'. And so then you get Seifer/Fuujin, which quite frankly makes me laugh because I think it would NEVER work out - Fuu would kick Seifer's ass long beforehand. XD

---------------------------

Growing out of a pairing. I've done a lot of that recently. It feels good. You know, when you look back at a pairing and think 'dear god how the hell did I even LIKE that pairing?' I realized this as I was cleaning out my room (going to renovate it w00t!) and throwing out old manga I didn't want anymore. Of course I'm a sentimental idiot...which means I read through everything before deciding to dump it. XD Gravitation. [link] Practically every yaoi fangirl loves it. It's what people always recommend to fans wanting to get into BL. Well I read through it again and HATED it. XD Shuichi was a whiny, bitchy little uke. :ohnoes: I don't remember that being the case when I was...what, 15? Ha, I'm a slash fan that hates Gravitation, wow. BD I like my slash with men behaving and looking more or less like men thanks very much. These girls with dicks kind of defeat the purpose. Read Under Grand Hotel, it's manly and fucking hot. That's why I kept my FAKE manga [link] , because geez Ryo might be an uke but he's got balls and is pretty damn good at kicking Dee's ass if he deserves it.

So yeah, we grow up, we move on. And a good thing too. Some of the stuff I used to ship was bland and embarrassing. XD

---------------------------

There's something else that doesn't make sense. Het shippers who think they can go crazy and deal crack on all of their fandom's characters and create the most insane ships and have a huge laugh about it but when slash shippers do the same thing it's suddenly disgusting and gross and they rant for hours about it. That's kind of unfair to judge isn't it guys? ^^; Oh please like we all haven't made up some WTF pairing, regardless of the gender of WHO was involved. Seeing as I like both slash AND het I often fail to see what the problem with either is.

---------------------------

I think it's totally fine if you don't like slash, or het for that matter. It doesn't make you whatever-phobic until you rant about it to the person who did it and tell them it's 'fucking wrong' or crap. I notice people who do this usually leave Anonymous reviews if a site allows it because yeah they have opinions, but they're too scared to give their identity along with it. |D Cowardice is SO in.

No one can make you like something. Well they can TRY, but it might not be pleasant. I can understand where people are coming from because yeah, I agree there ARE ships out there that shouldn't even EXIST because OHGODMYEYES. XDDD But what can you do? Seriously: grow up, grit your teeth and bear it. Don't go flaming every poor sod you come across. If you have issues rant about them in you LJ or listen to emo music or some crap. Don't take it out on other people. I mean guys come on, it's sad you know...Seeing people fighting about who's fucking who. They're FICTIONAL characters. Get over it. The sooner you realize that the better.

Holy crap.
Wait.
You don't like Gravitation either?
LIEKWHOA.
XD And here I thought I was odd because I hated that manga.

Anyway, I can understand where you're coming from, liking both het and slash pairings.
It just really gets me confused when people start wars over things like that.

Oh jeez, this reminds me of this bad fanfiction I read once.
It was from Fullmetal Alchemist, and the author's favorite pairings was Roy/Ed. In the fic, Ed is seriously wounded, asks Roy to kill him... Roy doesn't want to, but suddenly, his second in command Riza kills Ed, supposedly out of /jealousy/.
I don't know if you're familiar with FMA, but Riza is an amazing, independent character with a good head on her shoulders. She's not some bitch who would off her commander's lover out of jealousy. (Or else she would be a very busy murderess, since Roy is a flirt).

Fanfics like that bug me, where they make the more hinted love interest in the actual series a complete bitch. This usually happens in either Mary Sue fics, or slash ones.
Argh.

Science vs. magic
"It really shouldn't work that way." vs. "But it does, so shut up!"
I think this pretty much sums up why I don't 'ship' anything. Don't get me wrong I primarily write one pairing - my favorite - BUT I have never will never try to convince anyone that there's subtext... except my hubby and only because I like to torment him. :p

Seriously though I'll read/look at/fave a huge variety of stuff. For me if I like a piece it's less about the particular pairing and more about the artist or writer's ability to write or draw them.

And I get the liking men who are men thing... I prefer pushy ukes and badass ukes and well switching it up to the pushOVER uke or well the chick with a dick. Even when I genderbend I prefer the girl to be a tomboy if the character is actually male. With the exception of if the man is kind of girlie to begin with ie Haku - Naruto. Haku really is like the reverse of a chick with a dick. But he doesn't appeal to me and most guys that are like that don't.

One of my favorite canon yaoi pairings is FAKE, the other I'd say... Yellow.

Hahah, my friend keeps ranting about an FMA fic she read that was Roy/Hughes where Hughes left his family for Roy. And we're like, "D8 um except that Hughes' entire life revolves around his family, you dolts".

Yeah. It helps if people keep their shit in character. :|

And like, Ok, I watched the first episode of Gravitation (which, OK. MANGA'S ALWAYS BETTER OMG but whatever, I was lazy). And I thought it sucked. The characters were completely one-dimensional. And OK I frikkin' DISLIKE when someone meets another someone and "instantly fall in love" and I really hate it when they use that term for it. Like. Argh. I mean, let the relationship develop a little bit, eh? In the one concept I have, eXiled, these two guys have known each other for like 10 years and then they give the whole relationship thing a try, and Evan doesn't even say "I love you" for months (I mean, "I love you as my boyfriend"; he's always loved Miles as a friend, but yeah). Like, c'mon. :| I have a real problem with love at first sight situations. Infatuation, yes, love no. :C

Yep. Now you've got me ranting. Wonderful. xD

Dude. I'm going to friend you on LJ. I'm the_crass_nova, fer the head's up. :D

OH AND OK this Aladdin subtext stamp you have is oddly fascinating. Is that from King of Thieves? I haven't seen the sequels in ages.

"Originality is the fine art of remembering what you hear and forgetting where you heard it."
:highfive: Ha! And here I thought it was just me! yay us! XD

It's really bemusing I have to say. And you get so much more variety by accepting both slash AND het but hey if it's not someone's cup of tea I won't press it. At least not until they get obnoxious about it. BD

Oh believe me I'm VERY familiar with FMA. It's one of my oldest fandoms. XD Riza is kickass awesome. Sure she keeps Roy in line but she wouldn't do in someone he loved because she was jealous. She's not that kind of petty bitch. She's about as fond of Ed as the rest of Roy's team and I seriously doubt she'd kill him over a reason like that. As much as I like Roy/Ed, it is a good example of a popular pairing turned sour by bad fandom.

It's either the hinted or the ACTUAL love interest suddenly becoming a complete cow. I hate that, especially in slash fic because dude I know you want to get your men together so they can start fucking around but doing it that way is just...ugh. I know, it's almost painfully hard to find a Seifer/Squall fict hat doesn't have SOME kind of Rinoa-bashing. |D And you wonder why people get a bad impression of slashers.

XD I can't imagine NOT shipping, subtext is everywhere in my overactive imagination. I envy you in that sense. I know I have my fangirl moments but I don't go around screaming 'OMGCANON' and forcing it on people. |D

There are just some pairings that shouldn't be written/drawn EVER, but that aside if it looks interesting and the creator can successfully pull it off I'm all for it. But really how often does something that good happen?

That's why I'm not really into the yaoi manga scene, because one usually looks/acts overtly masculine and the other like a complete woman. I don't even believe or like the seme/uke dynamic at all but if it's blatantly shown off like it is in manga I just go with it. Bishonen are sometimes TOO pretty, unnaturally so and it's a turn off - like Haku. Sure he could kick ass but his prettiness weirded me out. A guy can be ';pretty' while still looking like a MAN, both in face and body. I like those types. Gender ambiguity is all well and good but it gets frustrating.

FAKE is awesome. So is Kyou Kara Maou, though it's questionable if the main character and his (self-appointed) love interest will ever stop dancing around each other. XD

I really don't like Roy/Hughes all that much because as you said Hughes is batshit insane over his family and he'd NEVER abandon them like that. I suppose if it was unrequited from Roy's standpoint then yeah, ok at least that makes more sense. I stick to Roy/Ed because it gives you more space to work with. Which is a small blessing in itself. |D

I swear nothing makes me happier than beautiful, in character fic. I really need to make a rec list on LJ so I don't lose them. >8|

I bought the entire TV series [13 eps I think] on DVD at a con for $40-something. Biggest waste of money ever. BD;; Manga usually IS better, but in this case not really. I didn't really pay attention when I was younger but looking back on it NOW, the characters are really flat. Shuichi's a whiny teenage bitch and Yuki's the sexy angsty bastard and OMG they fall in love at first sight. Srsly, as much as the romantic in me loves that idea it just doesn't work like that in real life. That said I love watching relationships grow and develop, there's just something infinitely sweeter about that; even more so if they have a hard time saying 'I love you.' X) I believe in seeing a person and thinking 'whoa damn they're hot' and then persuing them but love comes WAY later because it has so much more emotional baggage attached.

GOOD. I write rants to provoke MOAR RANTS. XDDD ;)

Cool! 8D I'll go look that up and friend you back!

LOL no it's from the Aladdin TV series, specifically 'The Secret of Dagger Rock' episode. The bad guy is Mozenrath, one of the series' most reoccuring villains. He's basically a pretty, bad-boy version of Aladdin who uses sorcery and dark magic and wants to capture the Genie. Iago calls him 'Jafar Jr.'

Yeah... I started off really liking Gravi (because my first introduction to manga was FAKE in eighth grade and they kinda happened simultaneously), but past book 5 or so things started to get really screwy and I was completely turned off of the series. I mean, it had always been one of those 'okay, this is a little stupid but I'll go along with it because I like the main pairing' series for me, but I ended up only finishing the series because I can't stand to leave something unfinished. That would be why Gravi is still sitting on a shelf at Borders while the entire FAKE series is behind a secret shelf in my room. (I love my secret shelf so goddamn much.)
The only other thing I'll comment about is the Avatar thing. And I really don't want to start a war in the comments, so I'll keep it short, but I honestly don't see any Zutara in Avatar. And I watched the entire series start to finish a month ago, so it's still pretty fresh. I mean, with the Crystal Cave scene there could be some. And now that they're in the same group there could be a lot more opportunities. But before that, Zuko barely thought about Katara except as 'that waterbender in the Avatar's group', and Katara said that she thought of Zuko's face when she thought of the enemy. At this point, Zukaang seems more realistic to me than Zutara. (Although I don't really ship that relationship either. God, what's wrong with me?!)

"What's that?"
"According to my instruments - that is the universe collapsing."
"...Pretty."
I know what you mean. Personally, I like Cassie with Tobias and whatnot. And I have TRIED to see the good in Zutarra only to come so very, very short on what is so great about it?

I wish we can enjoy what we enjoy and not get in each other's throats....

You are so head on about the pre-teen fanbrat thing. One of my friends dealt with a flamer that kept going back to her account and bashing the pairings she chose....friend was weirded out and decided to look up on the flamer's page. The flamer was, like, eleven or twelve, and apparently did not agree with what my friend liked....and ugh...the messages the flamer gave her was disgusting.

Yellow totally kicks ass. OMG, so amazing.

*cough* And I also agree with the rant, for the most part. But I'll post a separate reply to that. ^^;
